The boys are at it again, and this time it is a list of Top Short Games on the Switch. This means games that can be cleared in short amounts of time, but they still leave a major impact. For those of you looking for some nice games to play on the go or on a trip, this list is for you! Games under 4 hours that you can enjoy in one sitting anywhere and everywhere. Check out the video below, or continue down to read the transcript. Let’s go!
Donut County is a neat little game which we enjoyed very much and certainly does not outstay it’s welcome. Here we have a story about BK the Racoon who is one of many Raccoons that have taken over Donut county with remote-controlled trash-stealing holes. Why do they do this? Well, it is to earn prizes, of course. One day as BK falls into one of his own holes and is confronted by his friends they demand to know what the crack is. If you like physics games, then this is for you. It also has a bit of puzzle thrown in for good measure as well as exploration. This is a great little game to play and can be completed in an afternoon. This took me 2 hours.
What Remains of Edith Finch
What Remains of Edith Finch was a game I finished in one sitting, and that’s the whole point of this list. Short games that have an impact, and this one certainly stayed with me as an enjoyable experience. This particular game is a collection of strange tales about a family in Washington state. As Edith, you will explore the Finch house, which is huge. Edith is the last one of her family alive, but why is that? Well, that’s the mystery you have to solve, and it’s one that kept me glued from begging to end. The main game will take you just over 2 hours.
GRIS is a game we have harped on about many times on this channel from our review to the multiple lists it has graced. But it’s also a short game that can be completed in around 3 and a half hours. What an impact this has in its short time. Stunning artwork conveys all the emotion Gris is feeling in this game, and her pain is manifested through the dress she wears. With its excellent art and stunning musical score, get your headphones on and get lost in this wonderful experience. If you have not picked up Gris already, then pencil out an evening and take care of that.
Kamiko is one of the shortest games on this list and one that can be completed in just one hour. But before you write it off as being too short, let me tell you a few things about it. It’s a great little action game where you play as a priestess called Kamiko. You get to battle demons and solve a few puzzles for good measure. Each stage contains seals which you have to break to get through to the next. Short and sweet, and for the price of a coffee this is certainly one we recommend.
Subsurface Circular is a game which you can complete in 2 hours and is text based adventure with a twist. Here you are a detective investigating a series of disappearances among the city’s robotic working class. We found this interesting in that you get to collect words and phrases, and then use them in what are called dialogue puzzles. It was a game that kept us intrigued with it’s clever writing, great soundtrack, and very good artwork. A fine piece of work worth your time.
Abzu is one of our favorite indie games. This is certainly one to relax to as you swim deep into the ocean discovering all of its wonderful species and all of the vibrant colors that come with it. This is the definition of being immersed in its world. As you explore, you discover long lost secrets and come across some immense sea predators. Abzu is only 2 hours long, and I wish it was 10, which is the biggest praise I can give it. A game that lived long in my memory, and one that can be enjoyed anytime and anywhere.
Bulb Boy is a point and click horror that we reviewed a good while ago now, but it’s a game we remember whenever discussion comes up about horror games that stick in the memory. Here you get to defeat monsters as you explore bulb house. You can unscrew your head for use in some weird and wonderful places, and of course light your head up to see in the dark. A weird little game that we certainly enjoyed, and for just over £1 for 2 hours of goodness, it’s surely too good of a short game to pass up.
This game is around 2 hours long, but what we liked about this is how each little adventure is played over 60 seconds, hence the name. There are lots of secrets to uncover, foes to overcome, and all this to lift the curse. While the visuals are as simple as it gets, don’t ignore this great little adventure.
This is one of those games that’s very short at just a 1 and a half hours, but what a ride. If you love motorbikes, skateboards, dance battling, shooting lasers, and breaking hearts at 200 mph, then this is certainly for you. As the heart of a young woman breaks, the universe is disturbed, and it’s up to you to journey through a custom written pop soundtrack by chasing scores and restoring harmony. This one is nuts, but we absolutely love it. We think everyone should add this to their collection for a wild addictive ride, even if it is for a short time.
The Gardens Between
This is 2 and a half hours long, but this is a game that I personally believe everyone should own. An adventure puzzler in which you guide two best friends through a mysterious world of garden islands. This is an emotional journey which examines the significance of their friendship. It is a bitter sweet narrative as you solve puzzles revealing memories and how you are remembered. It’s a game which stayed with us long after finishing it, and when games like these are short but leave such an impact, you know you have played something special.
The clue of this is all in the name. You are a Gato, or cat in English, inside controlling a mech. You set off in this 3 hour adventure on a dangerous trek through an alien underworld. This is a cool little metroidvania with loads to explore even though it has a short playtime. The great thing here is you can explore areas outside of your mech using your feline skills to reach inaccessible areas but at the risk of your 9 lives. I reviewed this on the channel, so if you want to check out our review, please do so by visiting THIS LINK.
Untitled Goose Game
Untitled Goose Game is a 3-hour game, 5-hours if you want to complete it to the full. It’s one of those games you just wish was longer such is the quality. Has a game with a goose as a protagonist and a name which is out of the box ever caused such a stir like this? Not often, but this did and not only that it delivered on the hype. You are by all intense and purposes in control of a horrible goose, and you are there to basically terrorize the town folk by setting up pranks, stealing peoples stuff, and making peoples days miserable. I can’t think of a better way to pass the time!
Inside, from the creators of Limbo, is another great short game you should consider. It is about a boy who is hunted and alone at the center of a project you don’t even want to think about. You need to get out of there by jumping, creeping, and solving puzzles to get through. At 3 and a half hours long, it’s one of the best short games out there without a doubt. A little darker than most on this list, but it is well worth it.
This game is a work of art, and at the same time, it’s a game which yes is rather short but one we remembered for the lovely experience. Here you get to arrange lavishly illustrated panels in imaginative ways to solve puzzles. At first what seems simple is deliciously complex with a story to tell. Very satisfying at just over 2 hours.
Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons
This is a great adventure puzzle game lasting just over 3 hours. The locations are depicted with stunning artwork, and there are some pretty nasty bosses to face. You can play this either as a single player game or co-op on Switch where both brothers can be controlled. There is some bonus content included too with directors commentary.
