The world is uncertain right now, but there’s one thing we can rely on through thick and thin: video games! Just don’t bring the Switch into the bathroom, please. Wash your hands, people! Here are some Switch games that can soak up your time while in quarantine from the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
An obvious but superb choice would be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, a game that people are still addicted to almost a decade after its release. It has a huge world to explore, epic boss battles with various dragons in the game, an engaging narrative, side missions that unravel into hours and hours of content, and a satisfying progression system. I love exploring this world and finding new things I haven’t before. There’s nothing better than going into a cave and getting some epic loot! If you’re a Zelda fan, there’s also Switch exclusive content with a Link costume and the Master Sword as a weapon.
Final Fantasy X
If living in a medieval-like world is less your speed, a ticket to the beautiful world of Spira might be the way to go. Final Fantasy X made its Nintendo debut last year after many years of PlayStation exclusivity, and it’s likely the best version to have due to its portability. Switch games are wonderful for those lie-in-your-bed mornings. The story is fascinating as a being called Sin is a menace around Spira, collapsing cities in its wake. Yuna, a summoner, must take on a pilgrimage to cease Sin’s violence for a short age of peace. It has complex characters, around 50 hours of content with plenty of extra stuff to do, intense story moments, wonderful turn-based gameplay with mechanics to wrap your head around, and a jaw-dropping soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu. Just make sure to bring tissues (If you can find any…).
Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair
You know the best way to perk you up when you feel down? A good ol’ 2D platformer. And Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a depressingly underrated one. Its levels are cleverly designed by the former Rare developers at Playtonic Games, and the worlds come to life with bright colors and personality-filled backgrounds. This isn’t just any average platformer. Oh, no, no, no. It’s unique overworld is filled with puzzles and obstacles to figure out. Also, the main twist of this Yooka Laylee game is to defeat the Impossible Lair, and you can finish it at any time. However, there’s a reason why it’s called that. You will need help! Unless you’re a speedrunning megastar, you have to find bees to help you during that level to take hits for you. And you finish the levels to get these bees! Add in the quirky soundtrack by David Wise, Matt Griffin, Grant Kirkhope, and Dan Murdoch, and you have a brilliant 2D platformer.
Coffee Talk
Can’t go to a cafe because of the quarantine? Well, grab a cuppa, and check out this game. Presented with a stunning hand-drawn look and a chill lo-fi soundtrack, this visual novel lets you take on the role of a coffee barista extraordinaire! You serve your customers the coffee they’d like, add some stylistic flair, and listen to their problems. What makes this stand out even more is that it’s set in a fantasy world, where different races have class issues with each other. An elf, for example, wants to marry a succubus, and family issues stem from this situation. As this is all happening, a writer friend of yours is working on a book as she listens to these conversations. It’s a chill experience that will simulate that cafe experience you’d want during a quarantine.
